Locke and Early Modern Medicine

Call for articles to be published in Studi Lockiani: Ricerche sull’età moderna, issue no. 4, year 2023. The Journal publishes articles, notes, discussions and reviews written in English, Italian or French.

In the past decades, intellectual and cultural studies of early modern medical philosophies has turned into a thriving field intersecting the disciplinary boundaries of history of philosophy, history of science and history of technology. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, a number of thinkers as diverse as Marsilio Ficino, Girolamo Cardano, Francis Bacon, René Descartes and Denis Diderot, to mention only some of the most representative authors, deliberately meddled with the world of medical theory and practice, for they clearly realized that medicine and anatomy were dramatically reshaping the early modern landscape of human knowledge and technology. Locke, too, is one of the most significant and influential figures among the medical philosophers. At the beginning of the Essay concerning Human Understanding, he famously stated that his aim was not to meddle ‘with the Physical Consideration of the Mind’ (I, i, 2). And yet, as has been pointed out by several scholars, Locke’s philosophy is closely tied up not only with medicine and anatomy, but also with interests and concerns related to the domains of hygiene and prophylaxis, public health, child medical care and mental illness. From the point of view of medical theory and epistemology, Locke was fully aware of the close link between empiricism and scepticism, the interplay of Galenism and Helmontianism, and the strong but ambiguous appeal that mechanical philosophy had on medical practitioners at the time.

The 2023 issue of Studi Lockiani aims at publishing contributions that either detail Locke’s own involvement with medical research and practice or provide contextual information and fresh arguments to shed new light on Locke’s thought on the surrounding worlds of medicine and philosophy at large. The issue also intends to take stock of the remarkable progress made in this field in the past two decades and provide a future reference work on the topic of Locke and medicine.
